I believe work is a holistic endeavor, and writing especially so. The space of work, the equipment and apps used, the routine, even what you drink and eat, how you dress, your health—all of it affects work. A negative space and lack of sleep can make writing a slog.

One of the ways I do this is to travel. New locations inspire my writings, research, and editing—new surroundings, meeting new people, seeing old friends, and following a different routine all impact my work.

One of the places I frequent is a resort in the Palm Springs, California area. This desert oasis, located in the center of a long valley, is a beautiful contrast to the ocean side yacht I spend where I spend about half my time. I’ve made a number of friends there over the years, and it is always good to touch bases with them. The area has a variety of wonderful bars, restaurants, museums, theaters, and a plethora of golf courses. The hiking trails on either side of the valley are some of the best I have found (though not in the summer—115°F is just a bit too much for climbing a 1500 foot trail).

My routine varies while there, my in general I do research, writing, and editing in the morning. In the afternoons, I might sit by a pool and review a manuscript or read a book. Sometimes I will golf or hike. All of it brings me enthusiasm for my writing in its own special way.

I know some people prefer the same routine and the same space for their writing. I suspect this is a quirk of personality; each writer should explore the best way to write for them. This is mine.

Thank you to all my readers who have contacted me this week. It is for you that I do this work, and I love hearing from you.
