Cover Onesimus, a novel of Christianity in the Roman Empire by Markus McDowell

Based on a true story, Onesimus is the tale of a young, unhappy slave in the first century Roman Empire, a structured society of deities, slaves, masters, prostitutes, government corruption, soldiers. There was little opportunity to move out of one’s role. But Onesimus has a plan—until he is betrayed. His response leads him on a path of danger and deceit until he meets Paul of Tarsus. What he finds tests his courage, and Onesimus becomes part of one of the most charming stories in human history.

“…a fresh look at the Christian faith at its inception, through the eyes of a pagan slave…”
“… a fascinating story of love and betrayal, deception and revelation, and the search for integrity in a world of self-aggrandizement.”
John Sparks, editor
Historical Fiction Review
“McDowell’s depth of knowledge and research into the first-century Roman world and early Christianity made me feel like I’d gone back in time. The culture, the people, the food, and the beliefs were so engaging, I found myself arguing with the characters–many of whom are historical figures.”
Jane Elizabeth Thomas, author/writer

We follow the slave Onesimus who schemes to be free only to get in trouble for his efforts. Over the course of the book, he learns what it means to really be free.
Interspersed with Onesimus’ ongoing story are letters from the future that make you want to know the whole story and help you reflect on what already happened.
The story has just the right amount of suspense. I felt like I was right there with Onesimus, transported into the first century. I felt when he was overwhelmed as he arrived in a new city, I could almost taste his food, etc.
