Ethan of Athos by Lois McMaster Bujold is a science fiction novel that is part of the Vorkosigan series, although this one deals with a secondary character as the protagonist. It takes place on the unusual world of Athos, a remote planet entirely inhabited by men.

The unusual setting provides for some issues of gender dynamics and societal norms through the experiences of the protagonist, Ethan. Ethan is a doctor who is sent on a critical mission off-planet to secure new ovarian tissue cultures for his world’s reproduction—a daunting task given his lack of experience with the different cultures and genders of the universe—especially women.

Bujold’s writing is both engaging and thought-provoking. Her characters are well-developed, with Ethan’s character arc being particularly compelling. As he navigates the complexities of his task, Ethan’s naivety gives way to a more nuanced understanding of the world beyond Athos. His encounters with different characters challenge his preconceived notions, resulting in fascinating twists and turns that keep the reader hooked.

The book also grapples with broader themes such as gender roles, isolation, and the nature of society. Bujold’s portrayal of a males-only society is intriguing and prompts the reader to reflect on their own societal norms and biases. Written long before the cultural debates about gender today, bold takes no position, is not preachy (how refreshing), and merely let us experience differing views through the characters themselves.

Although I prefer reading about the main protagonist in the series, Miles Vorkosigan, or his parents, this one has a captivating storyline and some intellectual depth. Bujold’s masterful storytelling combined with her exploration of social themes results in a novel that is both entertaining and insightful.

I recommend Ethan of Athos to any reader who appreciates science fiction with depth and substance. Whether you’re a fan of character-driven narratives, intriguing social commentary, or just a well-crafted story, Ethan of Athos is worth a read.
